The US government has made several provisions to give educational grant to the economically backward few who cannot afford elementary and secondary education. An educational grant has been tailored to meet the special need of American children. Any tax-paying citizen of the US is eligible for these grants. These grants also support teaching and learning in colleges. The government has made provisions to give grants up to $4 billion to help in research, rehabilitation and adult education. There are two types of educational grants: discretionary grants and cooperative agreements. The former type is not taxable and the money does not have to be repaid. The latter type of grant is the same but involves an agreement between the grant giving body and the recipient.

You can easily distinguish between educational grant and other student financial aids. Individuals, schools and businesses can get hold of these grants. Students can apply for as many types of educational grants as possible but it is mandatory that they be used strictly for education. Some agencies which fund students might allow them to use part of the fund for other purposes. Citizens of the US who get hold of these grants need not pay them back. They can apply for these grants through the Internet or through regular mail.

The best way to apply for an educational grant is to find out everything about it and then make an application. There should be a brief overview of the program that the student wants to be involved in, the amount of money required and the time when the money is necessary. The applications are forwarded to the Department of Discretion where a special team looks into the needs of each student. You have to allow a period of 4-6 months to elapse before the person with the highest scores is awarded the educational grant. It is always the needy student with more than average skills who gets hold of these grants.
